Marked on OS as No.2 King Street.
Chemist's shop with accommodation above. Possibly mid C19 with
mid to late C18 and C17 remains. Painted scored render with
slate roof and yellow brick chimney caps.
2 storeys plus attic. The building occupies a prominent corner
site, with a 2-bay gable facing King Street. The 1st-floor
windows are 6-pane sashes with plain reveals. The attic is lit
by a single round-headed window with Gothick glazing. At the
left on the ground floor there is a shop window with plain
reveals, and at the right there is a timber shop window with
glazing bars. A similar window faces south towards the Market
Place. Between them, set at 45 degrees, is the entrance
doorway. A continuous timber entablature links the 2 facades
and is inscribed 'PATENT MEDICINES TEA OIL DRUG WAREHOUSE'.
Above the doorway there is a large curved sign-board and a
pestle and mortar. Above the southern window there is a 6-pane
sash with plain reveals.
Set back to its right, adjoining No.9A Market Place (qv) at
right angles, is a gabled single-bay wing which has a 5-panel
door on the ground floor, a glazing bar sash above on the 1st
floor, and a small opening within an attic gable. There are
chimney caps on the ridge to the left of this bay and on the
gable facing King Street. A rear wing faces north towards a
yard which opens into Lower Brook Street and has chamfered
mullioned windows of C17 type and a slated door canopy.
