Lodge and adjoining boundary walls at St George's Hospital,
formerly the Borough Fever Hospital. 1876-82, with mid C20
alterations. By SL Swann. Red brick, with blue brick and
ashlar dressings and single coped brick ridge and external
gable stacks. Gothic Revival style.
Plinth and string courses. 2 storeys; 2 window range. L-plan.
Main gable, to left, has elaborate traceried bargeboard
forming a round arch. 2 segmental pointed plain sashes. Below,
a square wooden bay window with hipped slate roof and
cast-iron crest, with 3 plain sashes. To right, set back bay
with a gabled through-eaves dormer with reglazed plain sash.
Below, a mid C20 lean-to glazed porch, adjoining the partly
rebuilt boundary wall. Right gable has a similar bargeboard to
the main gable, with an external gable stack.
INTERIOR not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: panelled brick boundary wall, enclosing 3
sides of the square site, has plinth and dentilled heads to
the panels. Winter Street range has stepped moulded ashlar
coping. Returns have stepped flat coping. Square corner piers
with dentilled heads and swept pyramidal caps. Adjoining the
lodge, 2 similar outer gate piers, and convex curved flanking
walls, that to the right altered. To right, a smaller gateway
with square piers.
