Description

SU 73-7450 & 73-7451 ODIHAM HIGH STREET
(South Side)

17/53 The Close

8.7.52

- II

C17, early C18 and later. Symmetrical north front of 2 storeys and attic,
2.1.2 windows. Red tiled roof, hipped at ends, with fully moulded modillion
cornice, which breaks into a pediment above the slightly projecting centre,
a flat-roofed dormer on each side. Stucco walling with plain openings,
the central window a tall round-arched (staircase) light above a smaller
round-headed window, stone cills, plinth. Sashes in exposed frames. A
lower plain wing extends to the east with a slate roof and a painted brick
blank wall. The east elevation reveals the L-shaped plan, the general
form being repeated as a narrow arrangement of 3 (formerly symmetrical
of 5) windows and 2 dormers. Walling is colourwashed brickwork (red and
blue Flemish bond) and the south bay has a red brick porch with rusticated
jambs, keystone and flat arch within a gable. Further to the south, and
set back, is an older 2 storeyed block of lower height, with upper sash
windows and lower (3) mullion and transom leaded lights. The west elevation
of the main block is of 3 windows, and one dormer with coupled sashes.
The house is completed as a rectangular block with more recent additions
at lower levels, resulting in a most elaborate roof plan.
