SJ 87 NE WILMSLOW FORMER U.D. HOUGH LANE

5/290 Barn 30m east of Chonar
Farmhouse.

Formerly part of Denton Old Hall, Manchester, now a barn: later C15,
C18 brick walls but removed and rebuilt c.1980. English garden wall
bond red brick on stone plinth. Welsh slate roof. Rectangular plan.
West face has a central cart entrance and a door under segmental
arches, and 2 square pitch holes above. South gable shows original
timberwork of cambered tiebeam with dentils and a central shield.
Small panelling above contains quatrefoil pierced wooden panels and a
2-light wood mullioned window.
Interior: of 4 bays but only end bays of 2 storeys. 3 roof trusses
have heavily moulded cambered tiebeams with applied long mouldings to
the sides with central blank shields. At the ends the tiebeams are
arch braced and have 2 diagonal struts above. The central one has
just a collar. Similar mouldings to ceiling beams which at north end
rest on brackets with carved 'lions heads' breathing flames on the
spandels. These brackets carry the mouldings onto the posts.
