Large lodging house. 1907 by W E Riley for London County Council. Red brick
with some glazed brown brick and rendering, slate roof. Humane, Arts and Crafts
Free Georgian design for a charitable lodging house, incorporating a former
dispensary. The large block extends between Drury Lane and Kean Street.
Principally of 5 storeys and basement with attic dormers in mansard and mansard
gables. Slight asymmetry in the grouping of the 20-bay Kemble Street front with
right hand half advanced. Semicircular arched entrance off centre in 1st bay of
advance, large semicircular arched ground floor windows. Upper floor windows
take the form of narrow 2-light recessed sashes. The rendered facing is applied
to the top floor beneath the eaves. 2 mansard gabled attics with dormers
between. Return to Drury Lane ends with a staircase tower and 2-storeyed oriel
beyond. Lower north wing with return to Kean Street, of 4 storeys, basement and
mansard, same details. Good Arts and Crafts area railings of elongated design
with ball finialed standards.
