ST 76 NE SWAINSWICK UPPER SWAINSWICK

5/235 Stable Cottage

G.V. II

Stables and coach-house (formerly to Upper Swainswick House, q.v.), now a house
and garage. Late C17, altered C18 and converted C20. Rubble with freestone
dressings; double Roman tiled roof with coped raised verges; ashlar stack off-
centre to right. 2 storeys, attic and cellar at right. The left part has two
2-light casement windows in chamfered mullions and surrounds; blocked segmental
headed carriage entry to centre; stable door in moulded surround to left and C20
gabled porch approached by a flight of steps at the right. Continuous string
course over left part and three 2-light casement windows on first floor. In the
north gable end is a keyed oval window in a square surround and C20 garage doors.
Interior: the cellar room has an ashlar fireplace in an ogee moulded surround and
with a 4-centred head.
