Description

BARKING STOWMARKET ROAD, NEEDHAM
TM 05 SE MARKET

2/44 Nos.1 & 2 Newton Cottages

2.9.85
II

A pair of cottages. Mid C18. 1 1/2 storeys. Timber-framed and roughcast-
rendered; thatch to main roof, clay pantiles to the lean-to along the rear
wall. 2 chimney-stacks, set on the rear wall, and now enclosed by the lean-
to: on the north in C18 red brick, and on the south rebuilt in the same style
in late C19 brick, both with square shafts. 2-light small-paned casement
windows and 2 flat-headed dormers with rendered cheeks and similar casements.
2 plank doors in plain surrounds. The interior of each cottage is divided
into a heated living-room, which includes the entry, and a small unheated room
next to it, probably originally a walk-in larder. The stair is in one corner.
This is a typical cottage layout, and there is no sign in the frame of any
access from one cottage to the other. The framing is of good quality for its
period; most of it is exposed inside: widely-spaced studs, primary braces,
middle rail; small chamfer on main beams, joists set on edge; rafters covered.
Listed as an early example of purpose-built cottages.
