Row of 7 small town houses. c.1830, altered. Red brick in
Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and slate roof.
Double-depth plan, each house single-fronted, with coupled
back extensions (probably added), except at No.15 which has an
individual extension, and a through lobby in the centre of
each pair. Two storeys over cellars, each house 2 bays; with a
1st floor sill-band, plain frieze and moulded gutter cornice,
continuous except at No.15 which steps down 8 courses. The
doorways, forming a triplet in the centre of each pair with
the lobby door between, have 3 steps at Nos.9 to 12, 4 steps
at Nos.13 and 14, 2 steps at No.15, all with nosings except at
No.10 (which are altered), round-headed architraves with
set-in Tuscan quarter-columns, plain lintels, and semicircular
fanlights with convex moulded surrounds, (altered doors). Each
house has one window at ground floor and 2 above, sashed
without glazing bars at Nos.9, 11 (restored) and 14,
(otherwise altered), all with raised sills and wedge lintels;
cellar windows at pavement level, all with altered glazing or
boarded, and protected by gratings. Ridge chimneys. Rear:
coupled 2-storey extensions with lean-to roofs, all added
except that to No.15 which is gabled.
INTERIOR of No.9 has small scullery in back extension, cellar
(entered by steps from kitchen of original building) with
central drain and washing boiler; otherwise not inspected. All
known to have former laundry cellars under front rooms.
The item is part of a formerly complete set of late Georgian
lower-middle class town houses in this street.
