Row of 3 town houses. Mid C19 (post 1847); altered. Red brick
in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and slate roof.
Double-depth plan, each house single-fronted and with a back
extension. Two storeys over basements, all formerly of 3 bays;
continuous stone plinth, moulded 1st floor sill-band, plain
frieze and moulded cornice; doorways to the left (up 3 steps).
Nos.1 and 2 have doorcases of engaged Ionic columns with
entablature and cornice, hollow-moulded jambs, altered doors
with overlights which have margin panes, canted bays at ground
floor which have cellar windows in the plinth and moulded
cornices with blocking courses (glazing altered), and 3
windows at 1st floor, those in the centre blocked and the
others altered as casements but all with wedge lintels. No.3
to the left has a late C19 porch composed of panelled square
columns and pilasters with a heavy entablature, a 12-pane sash
above this, and a 2-storey canted bay which has a 4-pane sash
at ground floor (but otherwise altered glazing) and a roof
balcony protected by spear railings. Chimneys on front slope
of roof; attic dormer to No.3. No.1 has a long return to
Frenchwood Street, including a 3-storey 2-bay section with
sashed windows of 12, 8, and 6 panes (apparently derelict at
time of survey, and some windows damaged).
INTERIOR: No.3 has moulded plaster vine friezes in front rooms
on both floors, marble fireplace at 1st floor, main staircase
with Jacobean-style balusters, rear wing containing kitchen
with very large fireplace, scullery and pantry, and servants'
staircase; full suite of cellar rooms including laundry at
front (fitted with fireplace, wash boiler and slopstone), wine
cellar with stone bins; and tunnel under road to garden
opposite.
