Includes: No.3A NEWHAVEN LANE.
House. Mid C17 and C18. Timber-framed with rendered brick
front and parapet. Gabled roof of clay plain tiles.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics, and 2 hipped dormers with
moulded eaves and 2-light casements. Rebuilt panelled parapet
and projecting deep bands below this and at first-floor level.
First floor has one double-hung sash window with small square
panes and one narrow similar window. Ground floor has similar
double-hung sash window and pedimented doorcase with Ionic
frieze breaking forward over Corinthianesque pilaster capitals
with grotesque masks. Recessed 6-panel door with top panels
glazed and 3 stone steps. Gable end stack to north.
Long 2-storey gabled, plain clay tile roofed block to rear
incorporating No.3A Newhaven Lane. This has large square,
ridgeline stack and Welsh slate lean-to roofed stair tower
rising above eaves line.
INTERIOR: entrance passage has partition of panelling and
elliptical rear arch with keystone and panelled pilasters.
Front ground-floor room has fine corner cupboard with
semi-domed head, semicircular shelving and later, enclosing
doors. (Wall behind of brick is curved to accommodate
cupboard.) Boxed spine beams in front rooms.
First-floor front room has jowled post exposed. Early C19 fire
surround on first floor. Sections of C17-style panelling and
C18 panelled and boarded doors. A projecting single bay of
framing to rear has chamfered spine beam and contemporary
bridging joist. Wide elliptical-plan fireplace. Ground floor
of this was probably original kitchen. Tight winder stair to
attic in rear. All roofs have joggled side purlins, probably
of 'A' frame type. High quality and complete C17/C18
interiors.
