House. C18 rear, refronted 1815.
MATERIALS: Ham Hill stone ashlar with half-hipped slate roof
and brick stacks to gable ends. Double-depth plan. Classical
style.
PLAN: double-depth plan with C19 brick rear extension to the
left.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; symmetrical 3-window range. All windows
are 6/6-pane sashes, those to the first-floor in moulded
architraves; taller sashes to the ground-floor set in recesses
with shallow aprons between cill and plinth. The 5-panel door
has one horizontal panel to the centre, all
raised-and-fielded; it is set in a casement-moulded round arch
with a traceried fanlight. The ground-floor has banded
rustication, and all the openings have rusticated voussoirs
reaching a low platband. Dentilled cornice beneath platband.
To the right-of-centre, below the parapet, is a large
hopperhead and downpipe. The rear extension has a segmental
arch to a cast-iron industrial-type window.
INTERIOR: the central hall has a semi-circular arch toward the
rear and a small foliate plaster ceiling rose at the foot of
the dogleg staircase which is to the rear left; it has stick
balusters, fretted ends and wreathed mahogany rail and curtail
step; 6-panel doors, the front rooms have a small panel to the
centre, those to the rear are C18 6-panel. Panelled shutters
to the ground-floor windows, those to the front have applied
reeded moulding. Front room to the left has a Regency-style
white marble fireplace and floral and dentilled embellishment
to a reeded cornice; rear left room has an open fire, the
stone lintel of which is now covered over. The front room to
the right has a reeded cornice with key-pattern freize, and
some cornices remain on the first floor.
HISTORY: the deeds of the house mention a cellar and a well
beneath the former kitchen to the rear right.
