Description

CREWKERNE

ST4409 MARKET SQUARE
876-1/7/103 (South side)
06/09/74 George Hotel

GV II

Hotel. Mid C18, with mid C19 rear left wing.
MATERIALS: Ham Hill stone ashlar with hipped slate roof and
brick stacks to side walls.
PLAN: double-depth plan to street-facing block, irregular
U-shape to the whole.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; symmetrical 5-window range. Rusticated
quoins; the central bay is stepped slightly forward, and the
moulded cornice of the open pediment to the top of it
continues to the sides below the parapet wall; the bases to
the sides of the pediment are supported by paired consoles.
All the windows are C20 horned plate-glass sashes in moulded
architraves; the central one to the first-floor has a
segmental pediment. Below it is an elliptical, hollow-moulded,
rusticated arch with scrolled copper and brass nameplates to
each side. This is the carriage entrance, an archway approx
15m long with 3 beams supporting the upper floors; that
nearest the front is massive.
The rear courtyard has extensive buildings to each side. Those
to the right, the further end of which cants inward, are now
shops; Ham Hill stone ashlar with moulded architraves and
keystones to 8/8-pane sashes, and a continuous cill course to
the first-floor; 2 doors with raised-and-fielded panels
remain.
The wing to the left is similar, but with reconstructed stone
architraves; the first-floor is an assembly room, rendered,
with large 12/12-pane sashes.
INTERIOR: an C18 square stone fireplace with a moulded outer
edge and beaded arris has a late C19 wooden mantelpiece
attached to the front of the lintel. Roof structure is
obscured except for the lower part of an arch brace at the
angle of the junction of the main building and the rear right
wing. The assembly room to the first floor of the rear left
wing retains some of its mid C19 character; a high coved
ceiling with vented ceiling roses, cornice, dado rail, and 2
elliptical arches to the left-hand wall.
HISTORY: there are records of the continuous existence of a
hotel on this site from 1541. The Crewkerne Assembly was held
at The George in the C18.
(Victoria County History: Somerset: P.9).
