Two houses; built as one high-quality house c.1520-40 of which No.1 comprises
the hall and No.2 a service cell. 2 storeys. 3 bays. Timber-framed and
plastered; the framing is fully exposed along the front elevation, with
plaster infill panels. The house was originally long-wall jettied towards the
street; the ground storey walling was pushed forward (probably in C18) and
plastered over to produce a flush facade (plaster removed mid C20).
Plaintiled roof with C16 internal end chimney to left. Four late C18 3-light
windows, the centre light containing a wrought iron casement. No.1 has a mid
C20 entrance door with multiple panels. No.2 has a C19 4-panelled door. The
externally-exposed framing shows enrichment which although now mutilated, has
been of high quality. The bressumer over the jetty is moulded and has a
frieze of cresting. The centre bay has contained a large tripartite hall
window of which the small right-hand side light is most complete: 3 moulded
mullions are each enriched with a form of crocketing, and in the head of each
light is a traceried arched inset. The blocked centre section has a deep cill
once projecting and moulded. The left-hand light has been replaced by a
doorway. At the extreme right are two further blocked windows of 4 lights,
the lower one being adjacent to a former cross entry and service block whose
site is occupied by Barn Cottage (see previous item ). In the hall is a wide
open fireplace with a reused moulded lintel, upon which is an incomplete
black-letter inscription. The end cell to left was subdivided into two small
rooms with broach-stop chamfered joists; this subdivision is unusual, there
normally being a parlour beyond the upper end of the hall. Arch windbraced
close studding. Evidence for coupled-rafter roof (rafters reused in C17
clasped purlin roof).
