Boys' hostel. Circa 1925-33. Buckland and Heywood. Red brick with stone dressings
and some darker brick dressings. Hipped plain tile roof, behind brick parapet.
H-plan with identical east and west fronts; 2 storeys, 9 bays. Rusticated brick
quoins. Flush brick plinth outlined in darker brick. Parapet with stone coping
and rectangular brick panels, outlined in darker brick, stone cornice band. Central
bay canted to first floor and parapet. To left and right, four 3 x 4 paned horned
sashes with glazing bars to ground floor, similar upper hung casements to first
floor. Central stone doorcase: Moulded stone surround, angle pilasters with
stylized capitals, moulded bases, stone finials resting on the cornice. Entablature
bearing house name. Pair of doors with 3 raised and fielded panels each, below
overlight with glazing bars arranged in diamond pattern. First floor window above
has moulded stone surround, and is also of 3 x 4 panes. Darker brickwork used in
flat arches of windows and in surrounds, is extended above and below to form apron-
like panel below first floor windows and similar but shallow feature of only 3
courses below ground floor windows. South face, central pedimented bay, with first
floor window in stone surround. Single storey housemaster's accommodation inserted
to front of facade. Northern arcaded service court with northern arch filling top
of H-plan, using various sized brickwork in detailing of capitals. One of ten
identical houses for pupils.
