Description

SK 80 SE MARTINSTHORPE

4/92 Martinsthorpe Farmhouse

II

House, late C16 or early C17. Coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and stone
tiled roof. l½ storeys, with all ground floor openings bricked up, but possibly
formerly having a central doorway. One upper window, while blocked, still
retains its ovolo moulded mullion. 3 gabled and coped large dormers. Moulded
sill course. Single 2-light mullioned window in gable. To rear, a plinth
with ground level blocked window and other blocked openings at various heights.
The principal feature of the rear is the central stack, which projects in
a massive gable. Moulded stone stacks also on end gables which are coped
and formed of large stepped stones. The house is the sole survivor of the
village of Martinsthorpe, and reputed to have been converted from the stables
of a former mansion. The house is itself long-abandoned and many features
blocked up. The village was deserted in 1589, the hall demolished in 1775,
and this house shows no traces of the former stables.
