Description

ST ERVAN
SW 97 SW
4/170 Pentruse, farm building about 15
metres north-north-west of Pentruse
Farmhouse

II

Shippon with loft and adjoining hen-house and dovecot. Circa mid C19 with later C19
hen-house/dovecot extension. Dressed shale rubble. Rag slate roof with gabled ends;
the hen-house/dovecot at the right north end has a higher roof level; black glazed
ridge tiles.
Plan: Overall rectangular plan. The shippon to the left is rectangular on plan with
doorways at the back facing the farmyard and external steps at the front to the loft
above. Later in the C19 the hen-house/dovecot was added to the right hand north end.
Exterior: 2 storeys. The shippon to the left has a flight of stone steps against
the front to a central loft doorway on the first floor. To the left on the first
floor a small C19 9-pane horizontally pivotted window and under the eaves a row of
pigeon holes.
To the right (north) the hen-house/dovecot is in the form of a short square tower
with the gable end of the roof facing the front. In the gabled front a tall round-
headed window with lapped panes and an open head with boarded doors, following the
arch of the window there is a row of pigeon holes with slate ledges, To the left on
the ground floor the doorway to the hen-house has a cambered brick arch. There are
also 2 pigeon holes in the gable at the back of the hen-house/dovecot.
At the back of the shippon there are shippon doorways with cambered brick arches
facing the farmyard. There is a similar doorway in the south end wall of the
shippon. A straight masonry joint between the 2 parts of the building indicates the
2 phases of building.
Interior: Only the interior of the hen-house/dovecot was inspected. At the bottom
there are 4 tiers of nesting boxes on all 4 walls with wooden lintels and brick
jambs. The joists across may have originally been perches and not intended to
support a floor. The interior of the shippon and its loft were not inspected.
This building is part of a little C19 planned farmstead of a small holding of about
50 acres; its other buildings including the house and kitchen garden walls are not
included.
