Bishop Auckland Cemetery chapel

GV II

Municipal cemetery chapel. Dated 1884.
MATERIALS: coursed squared stone with ashlar plinth, dressings
and graduated Lakeland slate roof. Nave with east apse, and
west porch with spire.
EXTERIOR: Gothic Revival style. 3-bay nave has trefoil heads
and quatrefoil top light to traceried windows on sloping sill
band. Bays defined by buttresses with 2 offsets. Polygonal
apse has lancets and high hipped roof. Porch has high pointed
open arches on 3 sides, with high gable over west. Angle
buttresses and 3 short offset stages all with sloped coping.
3rd offset has pinnacled corners and is broached to octagonal
base of belfry. Belfry stage has 8 tall gabled arches, and
high octagonal stone spire with wind vane finial. Gables have
gablets on kneelers, and moulded finials.
