Lamp post in front of Nos.89 and 90

II

Lamp post. 1836-1850. Approx 5.5m high, moved from Market
Place to High Street in 1863 and moved from War Memorial site
to present position in 1921. Cast-iron, round tapered fluted
stem surmounting bold leaf-decorated quarter round and cyma
moulded base. Lower supporting pedestal of reeded drum with
lower cornice similar to that on stem. Broad moulded base to
pavement. Upper C20 cylindrical stage carries pair of
bracketed C20 lamps with decorative scrolled ironwork and
pierced crown heads. The acorn of the C19 stem protrudes at
top. Old photographs of the town taken in 1854 show this lamp
as the central feature of the Market Place.
