GV II*

Large town house. Early/mid C18. Red brick with keyed
segmental arches; hipped rag slate roof with pediment to front
and central pedimental roof dormer to each of the other
elevations; modillioned and moulded wooden eaves cornice.
Double-depth plan. 2 storeys plus attics over basement;
symmetrical 1:3:1-bay west front. Original 12-pane hornless
sashes with thick glazing bars exept for some C20 copies;
oculus to pediment. Central wooden pedimented doorcase with
consoles and pulvinated frieze; later Gothic style panelled
door; steps up from either side of landing in front of doorway
and vase turned balustrade. Rear 5-window elevation has
central Ionic distyle pedimented wooden porch plus doorway
inserted to former window at far right with Gothic style
panelled door. INTERIOR: Original open-well open string stair
with 3 turned balusters per tread and ramped handrail and fine
quality plasterwork. The plasterwork is said to be by the same
craftsmen as that at Eagle Star House (qv) and Lawrence House
(qv). Castle Hill House is a virtually complete house of its
date with features of high quality both inside and out.
