Hotel. Mid C15 and later; completely remodelled and large back
wing added in 1927. Timber-frame with plaster infill and
brick; tile roof with brick return lateral and cross-axial
stacks. Half-H plan, with single-storey infill.
2 storeys; 4-window range. Paired gables with flanking gabled
wings. Brick ground floor with tile gabled coping to centre,
timber-framed wings flank paired stuccoed gables. Entrance has
segmental head and plank door. Windows have wooden mullions
and leaded glazing: 2-light window to left and 4-light window
to right of entrance, 5-light window to left end and
1:4:1-light canted bay window to right end. 1st floor has
3-light windows, and 4-light window to right end. Right return
has some exposed timber-framing and original external lateral
stack with offset shaft; attached gateway with tile pointed
arch and iron gates.
INTERIOR: chamfered beams and exposed timber-framing; some
original doorways with pointed or segmental heads. Wing to
right has former jetty beam with mortises for 4+4-light window
with diagonal mullions; late C16 panelling and chamfered stone
Tudor-headed fireplace with overmantel with marquetry to 3
round-headed panels; part of an important series of late C16
mural paintings of scenes from the book of Tobit with foliage
panels. Known as the King's House in 1560, owned by Robert
Perrott, innkeeper, d.1589; it has been an inn for most of its
history.
