Ilkley Station

II

2.
1864, by J H Sanders. Originally a terminus but with a through line (to Skipton)
added circa 1880 and now dismantled. The station building is on the south side
of the shed and set back somewhat from the road. It is of one storey, ashlar-faced
and with hipped slate roof over strongly bracketed cornice. In the centre is a
taller transverse block projecting on both fronts. The ends of the building also
project on both fronts. There is a large Venetian window in the central block (with
Tuscan columns and pilasters) and a 3-light window (with pilasters and entablature)
in each end projection. Between are 5 sash windows (with geometrically arranged
glazing bars under moulded arches. The front onto the platform is nearly the same
(but with doors in place of some of the windows). The interior of the central block
forms a single vestibule with entrances in the sides of the street projection (with
metal glazed canopies in the angle, supported on single columns with decorated spandrels)
and in the Venetian window to the platform.
The main canopy over the 3 platforms is of metal, in 2 spans, supported on 5 pairs
of square columns, fluted below and with tall bracketed capitals, each span consisting
of 6 horizontal ridges and furrows of glass. Extending eastwards along the platforms
are lower, separate ridge-and-furrow canopies, on pairs of octagonal columns similar
to the larger ones (7 bays on the north platform, 5 on the other 2).
On the north platform there is a cast-iron railing and a decorative iron scroll
wall-bracket, supporting a sign.
Except for the length of the station building, the platform shed is enclosed by
a plain wall of coursed stone.
There are 4 decorated metal gas-lamp posts (the heads missing) on the outer part
of the middle platform.
