Description

SU 55 NW ECCHINSWELL & SYDMONTON HIGH STREET
8/1
16.5.66 Church of St Lawrence

II

1886, by Bodley and Garner, in the Decorated style. Nave and chancel in one line,
with aisles on each side, the south-west corner raised as a Tower. A continuous tile
roof over the whole building is brought lower above the aisles at a slightly lesser
angle. The walling is of knapped flint with Bathstone dressings; eaves fascia with
brackets, banding in the west gables and tower, stepped buttresses, cill band at the
west end, quoins, plinth; the external facet of the half-hexagon Tower stair turret.
There are small cusped and ogee-headed lights in some places, coupled lights with
reticulated heads, and traceried windows at each end. The entrance is through the
base of the Tower, which has a square boarded belfry stage, surmounted by a plain
shingled spire. Within, there are 2 arches between nave and aisles, and between
chancel and south chapel, the plain walling between these 2 parts having a low
doorway, the entry to the choir being through a wooden screen. The north aisle passes
eastwards into an organ chamber and vestry. A 'Perpendicular' font has a wood cover
suspended from a decorative wrought-iron bracket. Interior details are simple, with
octagonal columns, and pointed arches in 3 stages.
