12/191 Tower House

GV II

Former school and schoolmaster's house, now house. 1847 by F.
O'Connor for the National Co-operative Land Company; later
alterations. Rendered walls lined as ashlar, above stone plinth,
Sussex-bond brickwork to rear lean-to; hexagonal slates to right
wing, left and centre ribbed concrete tiles. Two-bay, 2½ storey
cross wing in centre, 3-bay, single-storey wings each side, leanto
to back of right wing. Facade away from drive, facing north:
centre block, pair of central doors up 2 stone steps: flush panel
in bottom of each door, marginal light up sides. Either side a 2-
light mullion and transom, small panes, flat head. First floor
similar windows, blind recess in centre. In gable 2-light
casement with marginal lights and chamfered corners, plain
bargeboards. Fretwork, wavy eaves fascia each side: lateral
chimney on left return. Wings: three 2-light mullion and transom
windows, small panes, chamfered reveals: fretwork wavy fascia to
eaves; lateral chimney in centre rear on each. Right return:
centre boarded door up 3 stone steps; flat head: brick end to
leanto slightly set back on right. Above, louvred slit in gable,
wavy fretwork bargeboards, timber finial. Built as school for
Chartist settlement: forms group with Chartist cottages (q.v.).
