2/9 Thatcham House

House. 185O-6O. Gothic. Red brick with some black diapering; stone window dressings,
balustrades, bands, plinth and parapet. Plain tiled roofs with ridge cresting, and
parapetted gables with kneelers and finials. Various odd chimneys. Turret off-centre
to right with embattled stone parapet and sides with trefoiled window openings.
2 storeys, with attic to right. 2 blocks. Left of centre: 2 ground floor square bay
windows with unpierced quatrefoil parapet and 1O-light stone mullioned and
transomed windows. 3 first floor windows, large arches above those to right and left
with plain and fish scaled tile hanging, 6-light mullioned and transomed wooden
casements with small slit openings in gables above. Cross window in centre with
gable above hiding hipped roof behind. Central door with pointed arch, moulded
surround, hood mould and carved stops, in square head, with quatrefoils in spandrels.
Right of centre: 2 storey bay window to left with quatrefoil parapet. 2 gabled dormers
with decorated barge boards; embattled wall to right. Conservatory to left of wood
and glass with 3 parallel ranges, that in centre taller; central arched doorway with
Gothic glazing, and plain geometrical tracery in gable above. Rear: canted stone
bay window with cusped tracery, and traceried panels in embattled parapet. Ogee
arched doorway to left in entrance porch with embattled parapet.B.O.E.Berkshire.p.240.
