and railings c.220
of Swarland Old Hall
Gravestones and railed enclosure, C17 or late Cl9. Cut stone; wrought iron.
Original recumbent rectangular slab now illegible; the inscription, as
transcribed c.1810, copied on a late C19 arched headstone:
'Here lies the Body of WILLIAM HESILRIGE
Who departed this Life April 12, 1681
Aged 88 Years
This was Grandson to Esquire,
Yet to lie here was his desire;
Precious dust lies here enshrin'd
Which (friends are asked to bear in m)ind
All worldly pomp he did abhor
And (scorned the vaulted corri)dor
That dust might here mingle with clay,
Till call'd by God on the last day.
