Terrace of 4 houses, now 6 units. Circa 1760s. Nacevallen stone rubble with granite
jambstones and quoins with brick arches with projecting keystones. All under one
roof with half-hip at either end, originally all scantle slate but Nos 1 and 6 are
now asbestos slate and Nos 2 and 3 are slurried. Brick chimneys at either end and
over the 3 cross walls.
Originally 3 similar houses each with room on either side of passage to front,
central stair, and shallower service rooms to rear. Middle 2 houses are now
subdivided into 4 units.
Overall 9-window south front of 3 symmetrical 3-window fronts and a later 1-window
front, right. Second house has had doorway inserted to right of original door. All
with central doorways and Nos 1 and 2 have original 4-panel doors. No 2 has later
glazing to top panels. Shallow arches over openings. All have wide window openings
to left and right originally with 3-light casements of Burmese hardwood, 8 panes per
light, with internal ovolo-mouldings and pintail hinges to opening centre light.
Similar but narrower 2-light casements originally over doorways. No 1 has circa
early C19 tripartite hornless sashes with glazing bars, left and right, and 16-pane
hornless sash over door. No 2 has original C18 window to first floor, left, and
later casement below. No 3 has C20 steel casements. Nos 5 and 6 have original C18
windows except for ground floor left with later tripartite sash with glazing bars to
sidelights. No 6 is rendered and has C20 windows.
Rear has many original C18 2-light casements with 8 panes per light to ground floor
and 6 panes per light to first floor. No 1 has 3 original windows to first floor and
1 to ground floor No 2 has 2 original first floor windows and Nos 4 and 5 have 3
original first floor windows and ground floor one to No 4 only.
Interiors not inspected.
Said to have been built for workers at the smelting works formerly nearby. A rare
terrace of symmetrical houses at this date.
