Pair of attached houses. Probably late C18, with alterations of mid C19 and some C20
alterations. Slatestone rubble with granite quoins. Hipped slurried scantle slate
roof with ridge tiles. Stacks to sides with brick shafts with cornices.
Plan: Each house is of 2-room plan, with one room to front and one room to rear;
paired central entrances. Shell Cottage is to left and Old Hill Cottage to right.
Behind Old Hill Cottage there is an single storey outshut, probably of C19, raised in
height in C20.
Exterior: 2 storeys, a symmetrical 4-window front. First floor has four C19 16-pane
sashes with concrete lintels. Ground floor has C19 4-panelled and glazed door to
left to Shell Cottage, with C19 16-pane sash to left. Old Hill Cottage has a C20
glazed door, with similar 16-pane sash to right. Shell Cottage has a half-glazed C20
door to rear, 2-light casement to left and 3-pane light. The rear of Old Hill
Cottage has a single storey outshut with asbestos slate roof, with C20 upper storey
added and C20 glazed door.
Interior: Not inspected. Shell Cottage retains 2-panelled shutters to the ground
floor window. The houses may retain other features of the C18, such as panelled
doors.
