Chimney to air shaft at SJ 9377 7663

Chimney to air shaft: mid C19 for William Clayton. Coursed squared
buff sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings. Octagonal base with
hammer-dressed coping supports circular chimney with 4 false
loopholes. A projecting moulded cornice supports a castellated top.

Was the top of a ventilation shaft to a coal mine, the draught
provided by a furnace, but probably never used.
