9/94 Barn and cowhouse
at Smallfield -House,

north-west of house.
Barn and cowhouse. Probably late C17. Some internal timber framing.
Gritstone rubble, partly irregular and dry-walled, partly coursed,
squared and mortared. Stone slate roof. 5½ bays, set along slope with
partial outshut to downhill side. Uphill side has large quoins and
cart entrance to right with quoin reveals and harr-hung boarded doors.
To Left, inserted doorway with timber lintel, 2 slit vents. Two wood-
framed pitching-hole dormers rise above eaves, the left one collapsing.
Rear: rough boulder plinth, boarded door opposite cart entrance, Partial
aisle to right with boarded door, two small windows and part-glazed door
in left -end. Left return dry-walled. Right return: mortared walling,
lean-to buildings (not of special interest), shaped kneelers and gable
copings. Interior: stone-paved threshing floor. At the aisle end, 2
cruck pairs raised in wall or set on stylobates at the downhill aisled
side. Both pairs well curved with ties at wall plate level and above
single purlins, some windbraces. Saddle apex and square-set ridge,
The remaining roof spanned by 3 principal-rafter trusses with diagonal-
set ridge in peg-jointed apex. The truss over the aisle supported on
a braced arcade post. Much re-used timber in the aisle construction.
