5/61 Retaining wall to inner courtyard
at Thurland Castle, with tower base
adjoining on south-west side.

GV II

Wall, 1880s, with tower base probably C14th, sandstone rubble. Wall has
saddle-backed coping. At its northern end there is a doorway with
elliptical arch and a flight of stone steps leading down to a lower level.
At its south-eastern end it terminates with an octagonal pier. Against its
south-western side there is the base of a tower, of rectangular plan with
a weathered plinth. Its eastern wall has a chamfered doorway with a
chamfered surround on its inner side. Inside the tower is barrel-vaulted.
