SU 47 SW WELFORD WELFORD

12/7 Stable Block

6.4.67 II

Stable block now garages. Dated 1860 in a precocious Neo-Caroline style.
Red brick with blue diaper pattern and hipped plain tile roof. L-plan with
projecting centre to north and pedimented archway. One storey and attic,
brick plinth with rusticated brick quoins, stone dressings, rendered cornice
and boxed eaves. Central panelled cupola with concave pyramidal lead roof
and weathervane. 6 hipped dormers with volute shouldered and eared window
surrounds. 2 windows in outer bays only, glazing bar sashes. Central
archway breaking through eaves with open pediment over segmental arch.
Volute bracket keystone with head of horse topped by panel inscribed
CE/1860. Canopy inside courtyard with slate roof and sky lights on iron
supports of 7 bays in courtyard. C20 coachman's cottage to west of no
special interest.
