Description

CAMDEN

TQ2685NW NEW END
798-1/26/1193 Boilerhouse chimney at former New
End Hospital

GV II

Boilerhouse chimney. 1898. Designed by Keith D Young, built by
Frederick Gough and Co of Hendon. New End Hospital site
converted into residential use 1996-98, John Thompson
Associates, architects. Red brick with Portland stone
dressings. Rectangular plan, tapering towards the top which is
enriched with stone bands and surmounted by a moulded stone
cornice.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the chimney is the only surviving part of the
boiler and laundry house added to the Hampstead Workhouse
Infirmary (later the New End Hospital, qv) following the
Cleansing of Persons Act 1897. A rare surviving example of
this style of chimney in London. The Boilerhouse Chimney forms
a group with New End Hospital former Workhouse Block (qv), the
Circular Ward & attached Water Tower (qv) and the Infirmary
Block (qv). The chimney has considerable townscape value and
particularly strong visual group value with New End School
(qv). It is a local landmark.
