Description

CRANBORNE
SU 0513 CHURCH STREET

11/19 Nos. I and 2

GV II

House, now pair of cottages. C15 origin with C17 and C18 alterations, left
bay probably a C19 rebuild. Street facade of C18 Flemish-bond brickwork.
Thatched roof with brick stacks to gable-ends and along ridge. 2 storeys,
4 window range. 9-pane sash windows. Some openings blocked. Plank doors
to each cottage.

Not inspected internally but said to contain numerous early features including
the original roof construction with smoke-blackened timbers suggesting an
origin as an open hall. RCHM gives internal features as open fireplace with
chamfered bressummer with run-out stops, chamfered ceiling beam with ogee
stops and splat balusters to stairs. (RCHM, Dorset, vol.V, p.13, no.7.)
