Description

ST GILES ST GILES IN THE WOOD
SS 53 18 IN THE WOOD
18/239 Pair of adjacent headstones
- approximately 33 metres south-
south-west of the tower of the
Church of St Giles

GV II

2 adjacent headstones. Probably C18. Both are slate and one is set in front of the
other. The front headstone stands approximately 450 millimitres high with concave
corners. It is inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering. It is
anonymous and undated and takes the form of a farewell to his family from a husband
and father. This headstone covers most of the front of a probably C18 headstone,
approximately 550 millimetres high with a shaped head carved with a skull flanked by
scrolled decoration. The inscription is hidden but the back is also inscribed and it
records the death of Judith Voddem in 1827.
These 2 headstones have been repositioned here.
