Description

SW 72 SW MAWGAN-IN-MENEAGE TRELOWARREN

4/172 Carriage House (Bistro)

GV II

Carriage house incorporating wall of earlier building. Back wall probably C17,
otherwise circa early C19. Serpentine rubble, some dressed granite, brick piers and
arches to front. Roof hipped on right, adjoining another building on the left, dry
Delabole slate.
Rectangular plan: the rear wall is approx 80 centimetres thick and has blocked circa
C16 or C17 mullioned windows and doorway with remains of another doorway at the rear
left hand corner. Five bays long and with large carriage opening at the front of
each bay. Built end on to the slope. Converted into a restaurant in the C20 when
the doorways were glazed.
Single storey east front with 5 elliptically headed doorways with narrow brick piers
between. The piers have dressed granite blocks with pintails for hanging the former
doors and small blocks in the middle of each pier with fastenings to hold the doors
open. The building slopes down to the left with each doorway at a slightly different
level. The doorway is now filled with C20 doors and glazing.
The rear wall deserves closer examination both to establish the former extent of the
C16 or C17 building and to determine its original purpose.
