Description

SW 83 SW MYLOR COVENTRY ROAD, (south side),
Flushing
6/204 Sands Cottage

GV II

House. C18 and early C19. Rubble and painted cob, stuccoed front and
slatehanging to first floor of north west gable end. Grouted scantle slate
roofs with gable ends and sweeping lower to rear. Chimneys, formerly over
gable ends, removed C20. Overall L-shaped plan of C18 house linked to later
house at right angles by first floor room over carriageway. Ground floor of
C18 house remodelled in the C20 but was probably originally 2 rooms each side
of cross passage leading to central stair between narrower rear service rooms within probably integral outshut. Later house has similar plan.
2 storeys. North west, originally probably symmetrical, 3-window front to C18 part and symmetrical north east front to C19 part, plus window to deeply
recessed room, under wide eaves, with one 12-pane 2-light casement window.
The C19 part has central gabled porch with slate roof, C20 door and 12-pane horned sashes. The C18 front has circa early C19 hornless sashes to ground and first floor, left, first floor right, and replacement horned sash to first
floor, middle. An original circa mid C18 2-light casement with one original 6-pane light survives to ground floor near front of left-hand (north east gable end).
Interior not inspected.
A curious C19 adaptation, possibly formerly an inn.
