Reading room, 1897, now a private dwelling. Timber framed with painted
rough-rendered brick nogging. Chamfered brick and stone plinth and brick
rear wings and stacks. Welsh slate roofs. Single storey, 3 bays. Central
projecting porch and canopy with common catslide roof and part-glazed door.
Gabled projecting bay at right has 6-light mullioned-and-transomed casement
window with glazing bars in top lights. Close studding and curved tension
braces in gable, with mouchette-pierced bargeboards, spike finial and turned
pendants. Similar altered window in left bay. Remains of 2 ridge vents.
Left return has similar bay window with hipped roof. Right return has
similar mullioned-and-transomed windows. Gables have close studding and
similar bargeboards. Pair of lower rear wings with end stacks. Foundation
stone in plinth of right bay at front, inscribed: "THIS STONE WAS LAID BY -
G.H.T. NEWCOMEN ESQ. - IN COMMEMORATION OF - THE QUEEN'S DIAMOND - JUBILEE
1897". Included for historic interest.
