War memorial, c.1920. Dressed granite with bronze tablets, shield and
figure. Tapered flat-topped obelisk with fluted band at top and key-moulded
band at base. Deep chamfered plinth and one square and 2 octagonal steps.
Figure of Victory, with trumpet in right hand and wreath in left hand, on
obelisk. Carved wreath at head of east face of obelisk, above applied metal
lettering: "TO THE GLORIOUS DEAD", and shield depicting blast furnaces and
shipyard in relief. Tablet with applied lettering on east face of plinth.
Names of those who fell in Great War, 1914-1919, recorded on raised-lettered
tablets, on north, south and west faces of plinth.
