to East of The
Congregational Church.

War Memorial. Dated 1920. Yellow sandstone ashlar with grey granite
plaques. Square base of two steps supporting moulded plinth to square
body with cyma moulded cornice. This supports a square block on which
is set a circular cast iron lamp stand decorated with foliage in
relief. Twisted ladder supports to sides and hexagonal lantern above.
Eastern front has inscribed upon the second step GREAT EUROPEAN WAR
1914-1919 and on the base GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS
THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS

Above this is a small granite plaque inscribed 1939-1945 with the
names of two men. Above on the main body of the monument is a larger
rectangular granite plaque inscribed IN LOVING MEMORY with lists of
those who died, those missing and those who died in camp. Above this
in the frieze is inscribed THEY GAVE THEIR LIVES.
The North side has engraved in the cornice FOR GOD AND FREEDOM and
below IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF THE SERVICE OF and a list of names
with below at the base of the plinth FOR HE SHALL GIVE HIS
ANGELS/CHARGE OVER THEE TO KEEP/THEE IN ALL THY WAYS. West front: in
the frieze THEY GAVE THEIR SERVICE, with a list of names below on a
granite plaque and on the base O GIVE THANKS UNTO THE LORD FOR HE IS
GOOD/FOR HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOREVER. On the south side in the
cornice, THEY RISKED THEIR LIVES and on the base GOD IS OUR REFUGE AND
STRENGTH/A VERY PRESENT HELP IN TROUBLE
