Description

YARCOMBE
ST 20 NW
7/160 Emmets
-
- II
Cottage, formerly 2 cottages. Probably C18, modernised in the late C19 - early C20.
Plastered local stone and flint rubble; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20
brick; thatch roof.
Plan: the cottage is built on high ground near the top of a ridge. It is built
across the hillslope facing east and overlooking the Yarty Valley. It has a 3-room
plan. At the right (north) end is the kitchen with a gable-end plan. At the right
(north) end is the kitchen with a gable-end stack. In the centre is an unheated
service room and the stair, and at the left (south) end is the parlour with a gable-
end stack. Although it seems that it was formerly 2 cottages (e.g. there is
evidence of 2 front doorways) it is not clear how they were divided. 2 storeys with
lean-to service outshots to rear.
Exterior: irregular 3-window front of late C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars.
The front doorway is right of centre and contains a late C19 plank door behind a
contemporary gabled porch. The blocking of a second front doorway shows left of
centre. The roof is gable-ended.
Interior: is largely the result of late C19 and C20 modernisations. No carpentry
detail is exposed except for the chamfered oak lintel of the kitchen fireplace.
Roof not inspected.
