2/168 Lychgate to Church of St Andrews
- and flight of steps to south

GV
II

Lychgate and flight of semi-circular steps. Steps C18, lychgate C19. Red sandstone
lychgate with a tiled roof, gabled at ends, flight of red sandstone steps.
Stone end walls to the lychgate, widening at the top ; curved braces spring from
corbels on the north and south ends of the walls, supporting the gabled roof with
ornamental tiles and crested ridge tiles. Pair of timber gates, boarded below with
turned balusters above. A flight of semi-circular steps up to the lychgate from the
road creates a very attractive approach to the church.
Swete's watercolour of the church in 1796 shows the semi-circular steps with gate-
piers at the top.
Swete, "Picturesque sketches of Devon", vol 11 (1795). MS held by the Devon Record
Office.
