Description

OTTERTON FORE STREET (north side),
SY 0885
Otterton
7/155 No. 32, Santasu Cottage
GV II

House, part of a once-larger house. Probably C16 or C17, thoroughly refurbished in
1974. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; 1 stack of plastered stone rubble,
the other C19 brick, both with C19 brick chimney shafts; thatch roof.
2-room plan cottage facing south-south-east, say south, set back a short distance
from Fore Street. The right (eastern) room has a projecting brick gable-end stack
and the left room has a large projecting front lateral stack. The 2 rooms appear to
be the former hall and right end inner room of a former 3-room-and-through-passage
plan house. The hall may include the site of the former passage but, if so, the
passage screen has been removed. The service room end has been divided off and
rebuilt as the adjoining Milson Cottage (q.v.). 2 storeys.
Irregular 3-window front of 1974 casements with glazing bars, those on the first
floor rising a little into the eaves. The former hall stack projects left of
centre and includes a small fire window on the right side. Front doorway at left
end is behind a 1974 porch built across the corner with Milson Cottage. It has a
thatch monopitch roof and contains a panelled door and full height side light. Roof
is gable-ended.
Interior is largely the result of the 1974 refurbishment. The only old feature is
an apparently C17 soffit-chamfered and unstopped crossbeam. The hall fireplace was
rebuilt in 1974 and the owner claims that the roof structure was replaced at the
same time.
Santasu Cottage is one of a number of attractive listed buildings along Otterton
Fore Street.
