Description

MORETONHAMPSTEAD LIME STREET (east side),
SX 7586
Moretonhampstead
8/163 No. 6 Dolphin House
-
- II

House, formerly the Dolphin Inn. Probably C18 and possibly with some earlier
fabric, repaired and remodelled after a fire of 1816. Granite rubble, rendered at
sides and rear. Bitumen coated slate hipped roof with lead rolls to hips. Roof is
slightly lower at rear and a large chimney stack emerges at the junction of the 2
levels, with what appears to be a moulded cap with a later rendered shaft.
Double depth plan with 2 principal front rooms, one on either side of entrance
passage and with smaller service rooms at rear. The passage is wider at rear where
it contains the stairs.
3 storeys and cellar. Symmetrical 3 window range. Ground and first floor circa
mid C19 12-pane sashes with brick cambered arches. The first floor windows appear
to be in openings that have been reduced in size. Central round-arched doorway with
plastered surround, blind fanlight and 6-panel door, the top 4 panels glazed.
Below the ground floor windows are loading doors to cellars.
Interior: C19 joinery largely intact including panelled doors etc and some C18
fielded 2-panel doors. In ground floor left room a corner cupboard with fluted
pilasters and Doric entablature. C20 stairs.
