GV II

House. 1811 by Dent Hooper for John Wythe, extended right and
left c1820. Whitewashed and partly rendered brick. Centre with
roof of black-glazed pantiles, additions with slate roofs.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. 5-window range. Centre 1811 part has
3-window range. Central double glass doors in slightly
projecting porch. Plain hood over dentilled cornice. One
2-light metal casement with arched lights above. Either side
of doorway is a full-height bow, each floor with one 4-light
arched metal casement with leaded glazing. Dentil eaves
cornice below mansard roof. Internal gable-end stacks east and
west. Single-bay extensions right and left. Left (west)
extension with French windows to ground floor, with glazing
bars arched to imitate those of centre block. One 8/8 unhorned
sash to first floor with louvred shutters. Hipped roof. Stack
on west wall plane. Right (east) extension lit through one 8/8
unhorned sash each floor with arched glazing bars. Hipped
roof. Rear with staircase turret and two C20 conservatories.
INTERIOR: stick-baluster staircase inserted c1965. Entrance
hall with projecting peardrop cornice of c1965. West
ground-floor room with double wave-moulded C16 bridging beam
inserted c1965. Historical association as home of Sir
Frederick Ashton 1957-88, choreographer and dancer, Director
of Royal Ballet.
