Co-operative stores and warehouse, now Youth hostel, 1887, converted c1974. Coursed
squared rock-faced gritstone with gritstone dressings and quoins. Hipped slate roof
with stone side wall stacks.Four storeys, three bay facade and five bays long.
Arcade of three semi-circular headed, ovolo moulded arches across ground floor, central
one with doorcase, those to either side with large windows with rounded tops. Each
fanlight has white glass with inscription in gold letters, that to east 'GROCERIES
AND PROVISIONS', that to centre 'CO-OPERATIVE STORES' and that to west 'DRAPERIES
AND CLOTHING'. Above, two pairs of plain sashes in chamfered surrounds with drip-
moulds. Above, again two pairs of semi-circular headed plain sashes in chamfered
surrounds with semi-circular headed niche between,decorated with carving of a beehive
and inscribed 'Erected AD 1887, Established 1872'. To front,steps up to paved slope
with iron railings either side. Below, to west, double plank doors. Included for
group value only.
