Public building of uncertain purpose, mid-C16 or earlier, now a cottage. Timber
framed, partly plastered, partly weatherboarded, partly bricked, roof of
handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays aligned NE-SW with chimney stack in N corner
of middle bay. External chimney stack at SW end, now enclosed in adjacent
cottage. 2 storeys. SE elevation plastered, 2 C19 plain boarded doors with
tiled lean-to porches, one open, one weatherboarded, 2 C19 cast iron lattice
windows, one C19 wooden casement window. First floor, 2 C19 wooden casement
windows. The interior has jowled posts, heavy studding, one complete unglazed
window with 3 diamond mullions in upper part of the NW wall. The binding beams,
tiebeams and posts are chamfered with step stops. All joists plain and of
horizontal section, running lengthwise. The wallplate scarfs are face-halved,
bladed at one end and housed at the other (Hewett 1980, figure 269). Clasped
purlin roof with curved wind-bracing. The internal stack is of C16 bricks.
Originally there were no partitions on either floor. This building cannot have
been domestic in origin, and must have served some public function, probably
as a court house. It is a rare type, substantially unaltered, and therefore of
exceptional historic interest.
