Description

GARVESTONE REYMERSTON ROAD
TG 00 NW
6/30 Guntons Farmhouse
4.12.51
- II*
Former manor house. Late C16 and later. Timberframe with brick gable-ends
and a replacement brick facade. Pantile roofs. 2 storeys with attic. C18
symmetrical facade of 3 bays at ground floor and 4 bays at first floor.
4 surviving 3-light mullion and transom casement windows beneath skewback
arches. 2 C20 windows in original openings and a central panelled door with
pedimented doorcase. Dentil cornice. Gable-ends in English bond with
internal stacks and some surviving 2- to 4-light C16 hollow-chamfered mullion
windows. Rear wall with a central timber framed stair outshut with a
Victorian triangular headed window. Later lean-to outshut and some C20 brick
facing. Interior. Timber frame of heavy scantling and high quality. Dogleg
staircase of solid treads to first floor. Newel stair to attic. Long gallery
at first floor clearly primary because arched braces spring from principal
studs rather than from wall posts. Clasped purlin and queen strut roof with
windbracing. Long gallery with a painted inscription probably of C16 date.
