House. 1857. Red brick in Flemish bond with grey brick and sandstone
ashlar dressings. Welsh slate roof. Double-depth plan with 2-room,
central entrance-hall front, service wing to rear right. 2 storeys, 3
bays; symmetrical. Narrower central bay recessed. Entrance has 2 stone
steps to half-glazed panelled door with early C20 stained glass sailing
ship design, beneath moulded cornice and stained glass overlight,
rubbed-brick round arch with stepped ashlar keystone. Panelled roof of
porch forms floor of segmental-bowed first floor balcony with foliate
cast iron balustrade. Recessed 12-pane sashes in painted eared and
shouldered surrounds with ashlar sills and keyed segmental arches.
2-course grey brick first-floor band. First floor central bay has sash
with stained glass margin lights beneath keyed segmental arch, panelled
soffit and panelled wooden ogee-arched head to recess. Plain eaves
board. Hipped roof. Pair of corniced roof stacks. Left return has
pair of 12-pane sashes to each floor beneath cambered arches.
Interior. Entrance hall has moulded cornice, frieze and ceiling roses;
basket-arched opening to stairhall with large scrolled acanthus -
brackets, archivolt and panelled soffit; panelled doors in basket-arched
archivolts. Open-well staircase with wreathed handrail, turned
balusters and newel-post, scrolled tread-ends; stained glass
stairwindow, moulded cornice to upper hall. Moulded cornices to
ground-floor rooms, that to left with bold plasterwork frieze with swags
of fruit. First floor rooms with cornices and original chimney pieces.
Of interest as a very complete mid C19 house still in the Regency idiom.
