House. C16 open hall house with jettied W cross wing facing N, altered
in early C17. C18 SE kitchen wing. Timber frame on painted brick stepped
sill. Red brick painted kitchen wing. Roughcast hall range but exposed
close studding on cross wing. Steep old red tile roofs. Tiled hall and E
service end with inserted C18 floor, lobby entry beside central chimney
at upper end of hall (re-used C16 moulded fire lintel suggests an
earlier fire hood) and stair beyond stack. 2-storeys and attic 2-bay W
cross wing with jettied N gable, with bull-nosed joist-ends and cusped
C19 bargeboards with apex pendant. One and a half storeys C18 kitchen
wing with large internal S gable chimney and 2 gabled dormers. N front
has 3 3-light flat topped dormers, 3 2-light casement windows, gabled
porch and large central red brick chimney with moulded top and engaged
diagonal shafts. Low C19 lean-to on S side of hall range to improve
circulation. Interior has exposed timbers and axial beams. Only the W
end of the house is in Clothall Parish. The remainder is in Ardeley
Parish in East Hertfordshire district (q.v.).
