Almshouses,- now 3 houses. Later C19, said to be c1890, for
Gilston Estate. Vigorously picturesque block of 5 former estate
alms houses (now 3 houses) designed to give the appearance of a
larger medieval hall house with 2 cross wings and asymmetrically
placed projecting porch. Roughcast with applied timberframing to
gables. Steep red tiled roofs with trefoil pierced wavy
bargeboards. Bands of pointed tiling to front porch and gabled
end porches. Single storey centre with 2 gabled dormers to right
of porch all with bargeboards and carved finials. Tall yellow
stock brick chimneys with raised strips and bands and moulded
caps. 2- and 3-light wooden casement windows with small panes.
Open gabled porch to door on W end. Righthand front gable
carried down over former entrance in angle. A dramatic
picturesque composition at the centre of a group of C19 Gothic
buildings in the middle of the village. Included for group
value.
